Sleep advice can help in the treatment of sleep disorders

Added: 10/31/2005

Sleep, normal, regular state of rest of an organism. In contrast to the waking state, sleep is characterized by a low level of physiological functions (blood pressure, breathing, heartbeat) and a relatively low response to external stimuli. Many people are suffering from all sorts of sleeping disorders and need sleep advice. There are many different ways to treat sleep disorders, but it is always better to look for more gentle natural sleep aids (instead of using sleeping pills, for example).

A tremendous amount of knowledge has been accumulated about the central and peripheral mechanisms controlling and involving sleep, what is good for getting sleep advice. Basically, certain areas in the brain stem-the most primitive part of the brain and the part that controls such basic functions as breathing and heart rate-are involved in the control of the two sleep states. Considerable controversy still exists as to exactly which brain-stem regions are involved and how they interact, but it is known that several brain chemicals called biogenic amines-dopamine, noradrenaline, and serotonin-act as neurotransmitters and neuromodulators in regulating discharge of brain cells. The evidence is clearest for the involvement of serotonin. Serotonin is necessary for normal sleep to occur, although it is only one of many elements and is not sufficient in itself. The roles that noradrenaline and dopamine have in sleep are less certain. Recent research demonstrates that the human nervous system controls the body's functions differently during the sleep states than during waking. The details are complex, but natural sleep aids like breathing mechanisms, temperature mechanisms, and musculature all function differently during sleep. Sleep is essential for every human being. Although the duration of necessary sleep can vary greatly, everyone needs to sleep. Sleeping involves different physiological processes and helps human body to relax from all the day work. And for some people it is quite enough to have about 3 hours of sleep for the rest, while others need much more - about 10 or 12 hours a day. And the duration of needed sleep will also change with the age. Your sleep advice will be to find just the optimum duration - if you sleep too much or not enough time you will feel very tired during the day time. So, try to find the time you need to sleep with natural sleep aids to avoid possible complications or sleep disorders. Wrong duration of sleep or irregularity (modern life is so fast and intensive that people cannot sleep regularly) can lead to serious sleep disorders. According to statistical data more than 2 billion people worldwide suffer from fairly serious sleep disorders. And all those people look for the way to treat their condition - they all need some sort of sleep advice. A new field of clinical medicine-sleep medicine-is developing. Related to psychiatry and neurology, it deals with sleep disorders, of which many kinds can be identified. Sleep problems, that need natural sleep aids, are usually divided into three kinds: the insomnias, a group of problems producing difficulty in falling asleep or difficulty in staying asleep; hypersomnolence, characterized by too much sleep, or sleepiness when a person does not want to sleep, such as with narcolepsy; and episodic nocturnal events, consisting of disorders such as night terrors, nightmares, and sleepwalking or somnambulism. Many people try to find pills that can handle their problem.Along with numerous sleep pieces of advice on sleep disorders treatment there are natural sleep aids. These recepies have been used for centuries and have proved to be safe and very effective. Usually they are based on using different extracts and infusions of medical herbs. And, of course, the best way to go asleep is to be tired, so regular exercises can return you to a normal sleep easily. Insomnia and hypersomnolence are only symptoms and may have many different causes. For example, insomnia can be caused by such conditions as painful arthritis; by endocrine disturbances; by the use of certain chemical substances or by the withdrawal from others (including alcohol); by psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression; and by disturbances in biological clocks such as jet lag. In terms of treatment, therefore, insomnia is not an illness that can be cured by a sleeping pill. Doctors must provide sleep advice, determine and treat the insomnia's underlying cause.
