Soap plays an important role in people's lives, and it has a pretty long history. Soap is so widely used in everyday life that it is hard to imagine living without it. Even people in ancient times made different kinds of soap. At first, it was a secret technique used by small groups of soap makers.  It made soap expensive and, in many countries, there was even a monopoly on the production of soap. With time, the process of soap making became more public, but soap was still pretty expensive. It was because the main ingredients of animal and vegetable oils, along with plants' ashes, were used. That was until the 1791when a Frenchman, LeBlanc, discovered the chemical process of making soda ash out of salt. It was a breakthrough that allowed lowering the price of soap significantly.
 
Twenty years after LeBlanc's discovery, another Frenchman named Chevreul discovered different relations between fats, acid, and glycerin. That was the beginning of modern soap making. With another method of making soda ash discovered in 1800, soap became even cheaper. Since then there have been no major discoveries in that area, and, these days, soap is made by the same process.
 
The most widely used form of soap today is, of course, the solid bar. The modern cosmetic industry offers different bar soap using for all possible purposes. Because of the huge variety of bar soap ingredients, anyone can find the product that suits him/her.
 
However, in cosmetics industry there is a problem in soap making. Manufacturers of bar soap use different synthetic chemicals to lower the price of their product, and that can be potentially dangerous for your health. Because of that, many people these days are looking for more natural bar soaps. These products are labeled "organic," and are made of natural components, which makes them free from undesirable side effects.
 
Not many people know this, but it is not very hard to make your own soap at home. That way you can make any variety of soap you want. On the internet you can find a great number of different recipes for making soaps. You can even choose a recipe especially for your skin type, and/or vary different components to make the soap just perfect for you. Making bar soaps at home is also a wonderful opportunity to avoid all those potentially dangerous chemicals that are used in the modern cosmetic industry. This is very important to be sure that bar soap ingredients are safe for your health since some chemicals used in the modern cosmetic industry may have side effects. Adding different herbs and plants (usually their essential oils are added into bar soaps) to the recipes can make different natural soaps. With different herbs you can achieve different cosmetic results.
 
Making soap at home is also an opportunity to show your artistic abilities, as you can impress your friends with bar soaps of different shapes, colors, and sizes. You can make soap in special shapes for children. And the possibility to achieve any shape of soap also allows to fit it more firmly to your own body, which is really wonderful. Just imagine, you own soap made exclusively for your body.
